Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that treats dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for this is “malocclusion”, which simply means “bad bite”. It is oftentimes the “bad bite” that aids in the creation of dental disease because of the inabilty to properly cleanse tooth surfaces. When teeth become crowded or malpositioned, normal daily tasks such as brushing and flossing are much more difficult. This leads to a greater risk of developing dental decay or periodontal disease.
Straightening teeth with braces can be performed at all ages to correct “bad bites” when the adult teeth are erupted into the mouth. Many styles of braces are predominant today that include traditional metal, gold, clear, and lingual braces. Other therapies such as Invisalign (clear removable braces) can be used in some cases to correct crooked teeth.
Early orthodontic intervention may include the use of short-term fixed or removable appliances on children and pre-teens. These appliances are constructed to influence the craniofacial growth of the jaws, which can also be described as facial esthetics development. The craniofacial growth pattern of the jaws influences important aspects such as the position of the chin, placement of the tongue, posture of the lips, and alignment of teeth. Problematic craniofacial growth patterns can cause development of gummy smiles, protruding teeth, small chins, sunken cheeks, asymmetrical faces and other deficiencies. The treatment for craniofacial growth irregularities is known as Functional Orthodontics.
